Michael Behe

It all started when…

Michael Behe is a  professor of Biological Sciences at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. He received my Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978. His current research involves delineation of design and natural selection in protein structures. In addition to teaching and research Behe works as a senior fellow with the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science & Culture.

Behe has published over 35 articles in refereed biochemical journals, and has also written editorial features in Boston Review, American Spectator, and The New York Times. His book, Darwin’s Black Box, discusses the implications for neo-Darwinism of what I call “irreducibly complex” biochemical systems and has sold over 250,000 copies. The book was internationally reviewed in over one hundred publications and recently named by National Review and World magazine as one of the 100 most important books of the 20th century.

Video: Learn about IRREDUCIBLY complex mechanisms.

As we know, random changes and unguided natural processes routinely succeed in assembling functional equipment for a range of uses. Wait...it doesn't work that way? The Revolutionary Behe website, at http://revolutionarybehe.com/, features more information about Dr. Behe's research, other molecular machines, and evidence for intelligent design, and the stories of revolutionary scientists changing the evolutionary paradigm.
It is a shock to us in the twentieth century to discover, from observations science has made, that the fundamental mechanisms of life cannot be ascribed to natural selection, and therefore were designed. But we must deal with our shock as best we can and go on.

In 2005, Behe was called to testify in a six-week trial in Federal District Court in Harrisburg Pennsylvania, because eleven parents sued their school board a year ago after it voted to have teachers read students a brief statement introducing intelligent design in ninth-grade biology class. The statement said that there were "gaps in the theory" of evolution and that intelligent design was another explanation they should examine. As a result of the court case, a movie called expelled was produced by Ben Stein, called Expelled:

Ben Stein's "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" is a movie about the freedom of speech suppression to which Intelligent Design proponents are being subjected.
